ESSEN HEALTH CARE 1701 MACOMBS ROAD

ESSEN HEALTH CARE AT 1701 MACOMBS ROAD - THE BRONX, NY

Location:

Bronx, New York

Client/Owner:

Essen Health Care

Architect:

TPD Architecture, PLLC

https://tpdarchitecture.com/

Size:

39,000 Square Feet

Description:

Stratford Engineering was the structural engineer for the new seven-story building at 1701 Macombs Road in the Bronx, New York, for a new Essen Health Care facility. Stratford designed the new cast-in-place concrete with concrete shear walls and concrete flat slabs. Additional considerations for the building design include a roof screen for heavy mechanical equipment, various concrete and steel supports for medical equipment throughout the building, transfer beams to support shear walls above, and steel dunnage platforms for additional rooftop mechanical equipment.

Stratford was also the designer of the demolition of the existing one-story building in its place. Careful consideration was taken considering the new design during the demolition phase of the project. In addition to demolition, Stratford was in charge of the support of excavation of the building, as the foundation installation involved overcutting of the existing subgrade on all sides of the new building.

MOUNT VERNON HOSPITAL

MOUNT VERNON HOSPITAL - MT VERNON, NY

Location:

Mount Vernon, Westchester, New York

Architect:

Perkins Eastman
www.perkinseastman.com/

Size:

120,000 Square Feet

Description:

A new hospital was designed to take over an existing post office building in Mount Vernon, Westchester, New York. This existing 4-story, steel-framed building was designed to be converted to a new fully-operational hospital with a ground floor Emergency Department and first floor medical facility. Three new elevators (one freight, two passenger elevators) were designed within the building, which would replace the one existing elevator in the building. The existing elevator opening was infilled with new framing throughout the structure.

The structure was analyzed for an increased live load requirement as well as a new facade structure. Additional steel was also required to support the various pieces of equipment, such as CT Scan units and overhead-mounted X-Ray equipment. New steel dunnage was designed on the existing roof to support over 80,000 lbs. of mechanical equipment. Several new steel and cold-formed steel framed canopies were designed off of the existing exterior structure. New foundations were designed for the new elevator shafts down to below the first floor. Lastly, a seismic retrofit was designed throughout the building to accommodate the new building upgrades.

MEMORIAL SLOAN KETTERING MONMOUTH

MEMORIAL SLOAN KETTERING - MONMOUTH, NJ

Location:

Monmouth, NJ

Architect:

Perkins + Will
www.perkinswill.com/

Size:

326,000 square feet

Description:

Stratford Engineering was selected to serve as the engineer of record for this new LEED certified ambulatory care center in Monmouth County, New Jersey for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. A circa -1984 three-story vacant office building of approximately 285,000 square feet will be repaired and retrofitted to meet modern seismic requirements to house the facility. Using the latest engineering software and BIM modeling, Stratford Engineering provided its services for both the design and construction phases of this project.

Core scope includes MEP infrastructure and vertical circulation elements, including three new elevators and two new exit stair towers to be located to optimize patient flow and reduce impact of egress passageways on ground floor program space. New building additions include two new LINAC vaults located at the perimeter of the building, relocation and expansion of the loading dock to accommodate full-sized trucks at a mid-building location, new ambulance pick-up with covered canopy and vestibule, and a pedestrian bridge and entry canopy as a new means of access to the facility. In addition, a new courtyard was created by precisely cutting 11,000 square feet of the existing structure and reinforcing the opening with braced frames and horizontal cross bracing at two new pedestrian links that tie the two wings. Lastly, the project included design and coordination for a new data center to be used by a nationally recognized Fortune 500 technology leader.

The Monmouth project embodies MSKCC’s most recent expansion of their region ambulatory care centers. Its purpose is to augment the main hospital’s research and inpatient capabilities while providing convenient services to New Jersey’s outlying communities. Services include diagnostic, treatment, ambulatory surgery and rehabilitation.
