Description:
Stratford Engineering was the structural engineer for the new 12-story building at 342 Lenox Road in Brooklyn, New York. The new multi-family residential building, with a one-story rear outdoor terrace with a garden, is framed with concrete flat slabs and concrete columns and shear walls. The building contains a full-height central elevator and two full-height stair openings, and a walkable terrace roof. There is also two levels of parking on the ground floor and the partial cellar.
In addition to the superstructure, Stratford also designed the building’s foundation and support of excavation systems. The foundation consists of a thick mat foundation, various grade beams to provide lateral stability, and an elevator pit to accommodate the central elevator. The support of excavation consisted of overcutting of the existing soil in order to reach the desired grade beam and mat foundation depths. The bottom of footings were tapered down in order to match the adjacent buildings’ footings.
