Description:
A new 8-story building with a partial cellar plus an additional rear parking level was installed in Astoria, Queens, New York. Stratford Engineering provided structural design services for the superstructure and foundation of the new steel-framed building with steel columns and steel bracing. The structure's lateral system consisted of steel at three of the building’s elevations. A full-height stair shaft and a full-height elevator were constructed, along with front and rear balconies at each level. A full-length steel canopy was also installed above the ground floor of the building.
The ground floor was designed as a parking structure, and was constructed with a concrete flat slab supported by miscellaneous concrete foundation walls and concrete piers. The foundation was designed with concrete mat foundations, grade beams, and pile caps. Stratford designed the caisson piles and pile caps throughout the structure including the partial cellar.
